A SQUARE RED BRICK & STONE HOUSE IN A RURAL LOCATION, 10 minutes from Uzès.

It was the happy marriage in the 19th. century which gave us this charming rural house in peaceful surroundings. It is complimented by beautiful 16th. century buildings forming an interior courtyard, a converted guesthouse, gatehouse, outbuildings and stables (with 6 stalls).  9 hectares / @22 acres of land.

Close to Nîmes and Avignon, the elegant town of Uzès has preserved it's rich past in its centre. Encircled by the Boulevard Gambetta, the Mediaeval town is a maze of small streets and shaded squares lined with 17th and 18th century private residences.

Three imposing towers dominate the town; witnesses of the three powers that held authority during the Middle Ages:

The king's tower, the only remains of a long gone chateau, the bishop's tower and the ducal tower also called the Bermonde tower. The latter is part of the ducal palace.  The prettiest tower in Uzès is also the most discreet, the Fenestrelle tower, whose cylindrical steeple, unique in France, is the only remnant of the former Romanesque cathedral Saint-Theodorit, destroyed in 1563 by the Protestants. A large part of the population took part in the Reformation during the Wars of Religion, and the conflicts between Catholics and Protestants severely afflicted the town.

After the execution of the Duke of Montmorency in 1632 for rebellion, the Duke of Uzès inherited the title and prerogatives of the First Duke and Peer of France. Ever since, the town of Uzès proudly holds the title of "1st Duchy of France". The chateau has remained the residence of the ducal family for over a thousand years.

Under the arcades of the Place aux Herbes and along the neighbouring streets a market takes place every Saturday, with a long lasting reputation that extends beyond the region.
